Landscape Photographer- View from Around the World

Landscape Photography

Travelling Light

Throughout my career as a documentary and reportage photographer, capturing landscapes has always been an integral part of my storytelling. The natural environments I’ve encountered around the world—from the windswept steppes of Mongolia to the arid deserts of Morocco—are not just visually striking backdrops but key elements that shape the narratives of the people and cultures I document. While I don’t consider myself a traditional landscape photographer, the landscapes I photograph are intertwined with the human stories that are central to my work.

For me, landscapes serve as a canvas to explore the relationship between people and their environment, revealing how geography and climate influence lives and livelihoods. The snow-covered plains of Mongolia, the dense jungles of Brazil, the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, and the salt flats of Bolivia all carry a weight that goes beyond aesthetic beauty. They frame the stories of resilience, adaptation, and cultural identity that define the communities living within them.

My approach to landscape photography is rooted in environmental photography, emphasising how these settings reflect broader social, political, and ecological contexts. In Afghanistan, the stark mountains speak of isolation and survival, while in the Moroccan deserts, the endless horizons evoke the challenging nomadic lifestyle that has existed for centuries. In Bolivia, the high-altitude landscapes are not just stunning but also central to understanding the indigenous communities’ deep spiritual ties to the land.

Often, these landscapes become characters in their own right—harsh, demanding, and unforgiving, yet also beautiful and life-sustaining. They shape the people who inhabit them and dictate the rhythms of their existence. My goal is to go beyond picturesque scenery and capture the essence of these environments, revealing their impact on the human experience. It’s not just about recording a beautiful view; it’s about capturing the complex interplay between people and place, the way landscapes can shape identity and history.

Through this fusion of landscape and documentary photography, I strive to create images that resonate with viewers and offer a deeper understanding of the environments and the lives intertwined with them. These landscapes aren’t isolated frames; they are the threads that bind the narrative together, inviting viewers to see beyond the immediate and reflect on the larger story.
